We are becoming more mobile than ever before, thanks to technology that lets us interact personally and professionally in diverse, fluid ways. While there are ample reports to confirm this truth, one needs only look around while out and about to know it’s accurate. Everywhere, people are texting, taking photos and forwarding, checking email and even, well, talking using their multi-functional phones–Blackberries, iPhones and the like. Now, even netbooks and slimline laptops also make it easier to make great use of mobile broadband, enabling users to be fully functional while on the go.
Parks Associates, a Texas-based research firm specializing in”digital living technologies,” was widely quoted earlier this year as it announced that mobile broadband users will top 140 million by 2013. Likewise, a 2008 report from comScore, Inc. reported that Americans accessing the Internet via mobile broadband lept by 154% in 2007. In your business circles, has the topic of virtual offices, virtual receptionists or virtual assistants come up recently? I find it interestingly coincidental how frequently the topic is touched on during occasions of networking and biz talk in my circles. Admittedly, I’m attuned to zone in on a few key words and phrases. Nonetheless, I can honestly assess that virtual office and virtual staffing solutions are very timely, relevant…and talked about these days.
Another common topic that comes up in my circles is mobile technology. Nearly anytime there’s a pow-wow of colleagues, someone will pull out a cellphone to check a message or check the time. This action suddenly inspires everybody to compare Blackberries, extol the praises of iPhones and chat about their favorite apps. I can certainly attest, my work-a-day world friends seem far more loyal to and passionate about their chosen apps and mobile technology than they are loyal or passionate about their offices, desks or corporate conference rooms.

“Mobile” is an oft-repeated word these days. In my corner of the world, it’s most frequently used in reference to technology. We’re an increasingly mobile society thanks to technology that keeps us connected no matter where we are or what we’re doing. Being “mobile” means we can be functional whether at home, in an airport, nearly any point on the globe. Brands and corporations are constantly developing mobile applications in order to be present alongside us in the ‘moving experiences’ of our fast-paced lives.

I mentioned something about mobile technology, and she retorted that for her that phrase conjured images of a remote-controlled decorative item over her baby’s crib. From my friend’s vantage point, “mobile” presently has less to do with being untethered and staying on the go-go-go and everything to do with being restful and comforted in a place that’s constant and familiar.
